When you arrive at the Lhasa airport or train station, we will meet you and welcome you to Lhasa, Tibet. From the airport, travel about one hour through the Lhasa River Valley to reach the city of Lhasa. From the train station, it takes about 30 minutes to get to your hotel. After check in at your hotel, located in the old city near Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, you have the rest of the day on your own to relax and adjust to the high altitude, with an elevation of about 11,500 feet (3,490 meters, Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world.

Start your Lhasa highlights tour by visiting three of the city’s top attractions with your guide. Step out of your hotel to nearby Barkhor Street, which runs through the heart of the old city. Along the street you’ll find vendors selling Tibetan handicrafts such as prayer wheels, rugs, traditional clothing and Tibetan scroll paintings known as Thangka. Nearby, Jokhang Temple Monastery is considered the most revered temple in Tibet. Walk through the temple’s most important chapels, and admire a celebrated statue of Jowo Sakyamuni Buddha. Wearing colorful regional attire, pilgrims from across Tibet make the journey here to walk the circuit around Jokhang Temple.

Then travel by comfortable private vehicle to see Sera Monastery, located in the outskirts of the city. Founded in 1419 and considered one of Lhasa’s great Gelugpa monasteries, Sera is home to several hundred monks from different parts of Tibet. Follow your guide around the large complex, and learn about its architectural features and history of teaching generations of scholars. Witness the monks engaged in Buddhist philosophical debate in the courtyard, an event that occurs daily in the afternoons (except Sundays).

Today starts with a visit to Potala Palace, the cardinal landmark of Tibet and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This masterpiece of Tibetan architecture was first constructed in the seventh century, then rebuilt in the 17th century by the fifth Dalai Lama, and has served as the winter palace for a succession of Dalai Lamas. Tour the 13-story fort complex, which sits at 12,140 feet (3,700 meters) and overlooks the Lhasa Valley. The 1,000 rooms within the Palace hold thousands of historical and religious documents, including rare painted scrolls, sculptures, colorful murals and other fine objects.

Next, your driver takes you outside of central Lhasa to Drepung Monastery, part of the Gelugpa sect and a powerful university monastery that once had thousands of monks in residence. The lamas here helped train each new Dalai Lama. After touring the monastery, you may have time to stop in typical Tibetan villages before returning to the old city for your final evening in Lhasa.
